Mixed Berry Smoothie - How to Make a Fruit Smoothie With Frozen Fruit

A mixed berry smoothie is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. Making a smoothie with a blender is a fast and easy way to make a quick and healthy daily meal or a snack.

Options are endless, but I prefer mixing fruits with cottage cheese and maybe adding some protein powder (vanilla or berry flavor). There is no need to add natural or artificial sweeteners - personally, I like the mildly bitter taste of berries, but if you prefer, you can add some sweetener of your choice.

How to Make a Smoothie with Frozen Fruit

 Mixed berries are best when they are fresh - just as any other fruits. But they are hard to find fresh during the entire year - in fact, it is impossible. But fresh berries can be found as frozen berries - in many countries berries and similar fruits and vegetables must be frozen quickly after picking. That is why we have something called 'fresh frozen berries' :o)

If you have time, take your frozen berries out of the freezer and leave them for 30-45 minutes at room temperature to defrost.

If you don't have time (welcome to the club), put your berries in a strainer and wash them a little bit with warm (not hot) water. If it is summer, don't defrost them entirely.


Put the berries into the suitable pot. I use shakers for the same reason I use hand blenders - I have them around and they are easy to clean :o)

Note: when making berry smoothies (and similar fruits smoothies) be careful about stains - a single drop of berry juice can make a big mess and it is hard to clean ...


Put some cottage or low-fat cheese and some protein blend powder - casein protein powder is as good as whey protein powder.

If you use casein protein powder, you will get a really slow-digesting meal (5-6 hours or even more), while combining cheese with whey protein powder will give you a meal that will make you satiated for maybe 3-4 hours at most.


Add some water and using a hand blender (hand mixer) blend everything. As I said before, I add no sweeteners. After blending everything, try it and if you want, add some sweetener of your choice.


Mixed berries desert is done. Enjoy it ...

Note: During summer, I often leave it in the freezer for 30-60 minutes, then it is like ice-cream. But if you don't defrost your berries entirely, your mixed berries smoothie will be cold enough after blending that you will not have to put it into the freezer - you have made yourself both great tasting and refreshing smoothie ...

Nutritional values of mixed berries smoothie (without protein blend powder) are:

That is around 175 kcal, mostly from protein and carbohydrates, some from fats. Fiber content is very good.

I like to add protein powder into my smoothies, just to increase protein content:

That is around 280 kcal, most of which comes from protein, some from carbs, and very little from fats. Fiber content is the same - 6g. If you want, you can vary amounts of ingredients to achieve desired content.

In this smoothie, I added Ultimate Nutrition Wheat Protein Isolate, but you can use any suitable protein powder. I recommend using some protein blend used as Meal Replacement Powder (MRP).

This meal is suitable even for Lacto-ovo vegetarians.

Vegan Smoothie Recipe

For example, if you make a mixed berry smoothie using only mixed berries and UN Wheat Protein Isolate (or any similar plant-based protein powder), you will make a great vegan smoothie recipe:

This smoothie has only 160 calories and it is very 'thin' - if I don't add some cottage or low-fat cheese, I get hungry after a smoothie like this really quickly. Fortunately for vegans, most of them are much 'lighter' than me and this meal can keep them satiated for hours ...
