XTERRA Fitness TRX3500 Folding Treadmill Review

The XTERRA Fitness TRX3500 Folding Treadmill launched in 2017 is designed for home use but is equipped with a range of features like a light commercial exercise machine.

It’s a quite solid machine with a consistent in-home warranty and has an impressive weight capacity and running deck. It’s very versatile as compared to other treadmills in the same price range as they are designed mostly for lower intensity workouts.

Features of XTERRA Fitness TRX3500 Folding Treadmill

Assembly of the Xterra TRX3500 is quite easy because the unit comes mostly pre-assembled. Thus the deck with its belt, motors, and other parts are already attached to the bottom metallic frame. Users just have to attach the console masts, the towel hanging bar between them, and the console.

Thus assembly is just a 30-minute task. Another helping hand may make the job easier. The manual has clear assembly instructions and all the required tools are included in the package.

The Xterra TRX3500 is powered by a high torque 3.0 HP motor meant to support long-distance running exercises without getting overheated or losing performance. It features a small flywheel too that reduces vibration and thus offers a smoother motion of the front roller.

As mentioned earlier, the Xterra TRX3500 is a solid treadmill featuring a strong heavy gauge welded steel frame to support users up to 350 lbs.

Lift-Assist Folding Design and Safe Drop

foldedThe Xterra TRX3500 features a Lift Assist folding design. Users can fold the deck and lock it up, and that way the length of the unit is reduced by around 50%. The Safe Drop mechanism allows users to lower the deck slowly and safely.

The machine is quite weighty when fully assembled and thus requires a minimum two people to transport and assemble it. However, the weight considerably increases its stability.

Plus, the machine has adjustable levelers on both front and rear bases that improve its stability further. The levelers have large rubber pads to make the machine stabilize perfectly on any type of floor. It doesn’t wobble even if run at full speed.

The Xterra TRX3500 is a quite large treadmill. Its length is 77″ (196 cm) and width is 35″ (90 cm). Plus it’s recommended to leave a clearance of at least two feet on each side and at least three feet on the rear of the deck for ease of access and safe operation.

The front base of the machine has transport wheels which help in relocating the machine easily after it’s folded after the workout to store it away to another place.

The console of the Xterra TRX3500 is equipped with an impressive number of features.

Firstly, it has a 6.5” LCD display with a blue backlight that increases its readability. Next, the display is split into many sub-sections which show multiple workout stats at a time. The stats include time, distance, pace, heart rate, and calories, and also the selected speed and incline levels.

Speed and distance are available in both metric and imperial units. Thus, distance can be seen in miles or km whereas speed can be seen in MPH or km/h. Distance can also be seen as an animated 1/4 mile (400 m) racetrack graphic and will count users’ progress in the form of the laps they have completed.

The console offers two user profile settings. For each of them, users can select age, weight, duration of workout, and target heart rate. Thus, two users can use the machine and save their own settings. Also, due to the input of weight and age, the console can measure the amount of calories burned better.

Since 2018, a Bluetooth module was integrated into the console of Xterra TRX3500 machines that enables users to connect their smartphones or tablets that have the free Xterra Fitness app with their machine. Thus, users can directly stream their workout stats online, so that they can keep a better track of their progress and share their results on social media. The Xterra Fitness app even enables users to sync their workout data with one of the several fitness cloud sites, like Fitbit, Record, MapMyFitness, iHealth, and more.

Also, all Xterra TRX3500 treadmills manufactured after 11/1/19 are Zwift App compatible. Zwift is an interactive training and racing app that features a community that motivates users, flexible training plans, intuitive coaching, and 1000+ structured workouts that users can choose according to their goals and time.

Heart Rate Monitoring

The machine’s handlebars have heart rate sensors integrated in them which help users to monitor heart rate. But the console is telemetric too. Thus it can communicate with several wireless HR chest strap transmitters. However, an HR chest strap is not included with the Xterra TRX3500.

Workout Programs

The Xterra TRX3500 comes with 30 preset, 2 custom, 1 heart rate, and 1 manual workout program. The 30 preset programs include various workouts, with a great mix of fat burning, interval setup, and consistent cardio.

The two custom programs offer the possibility of designing one’s own workout, whereas the heart rate program is set to help users train at 116 bpm, but can be customized for any target heart rate. It will auto-adjust the speed of the tread belt, so as to keep users within the chosen heart rate interval. Each incline/speed workout can be tailored to run from 5 to 99 minutes.

Running Deck

The running surface of the Xterra TRX3500 is pretty professional measuring 60L x 20W inches (152.4L x 51W cm). The built-in 2-ply Duraweave belt offers superior adherence. It has crowned rollers that improve traction and increase the lifespan of the belt.

The rollers feature industrial-grade ball bearings that deliver a very smooth motion. The belt can accommodate users up to the height of 6’5″ (196 cm), thus facilitating a full stride even at maximum speed.

The deck is equipped with the XTRASoft shock absorption system comprising of multiple points of cushioning all through the deck for excellent impact absorption. Thus, users will experience less exercise-associated pain while running on this belt and can run for longer than that on concrete or asphalt.

Incline Settings

The Xterra TRX3500 is equipped with a motorized incline system, consisting of a lift element located under the first section of the deck and a motor that can set this lift in motion. Obviously the incline can be adjusted only from the console and via the controls integrated in the left handlebar when the treadmill is connected to a power source.

The range of the incline is from 0% to 12%. Although a commercial treadmill provides much more incline than this, even 12% can provide a significantly high difficulty level during a workout. E.g. a combination of 10 MPH of speed and incline of 10% performed for more than a few minutes can provide a workout that requires a considerably high level of fitness.

Among the preset programs in the console, some use incline. Thus, the machine auto-adjusts the incline when users choose to do those workouts. There is also a quick selection of incline controls on the console for 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12% of incline settings.

The speed range of the Xterra TRX3500 is from 0.5 MPH to 12 MPH. Just like that for the incline, the controls of gradual and quick adjustments of speed are featured on the console. However, the quick adjustments are only for 1 to 10 MPH. Thus, if users want to adjust the control further, they have to use the arrow keys on the console.

Speed adjustment controls are also integrated in the right handlebar which users can use too. The increment in speed is of 0.1 MPH and 0.5 MPH. Thus, if users press the button repeatedly, speed will increase in the increment of 0.1 MPH, but if they keep the button pressed, the speed will increase in the increments of 0.5 MPH.

Step-up Height

The running surface of the Xterra TRX3500 is located at around 8″ (20 cm) above floor level. Also, when users will set the incline to its maximum level the front part will attain a height of around 13.5″ (34 cm) above floor level. Therefore it’s advisable to use the machine in a room having a ceiling height which is at least 20″ (51 cm) higher than the user’s own height.

Safety Tether

The Xterra TRX3500 comes with a safety tether with a magnet that attaches to users’ waistband to automatically stop the machine in case of an emergency or accidental fall.

The Xterra TRX3500 brings users many add-ons.

To start with, it has a sound system that consists of two large speakers, flanking the console. Then the console has an audio jack input in which users can connect to their phone, tablet, or MP3 player and listen to their favorite music on the integrated speakers.

Then the machine features a workout fan that is not very powerful, but does offer a little cooling when users break out in a sweat.

Above the fan, there is a tablet holder, which can accommodate any tablet. But it doesn’t feature a USB docking port.

The dashboard of the treadmill features two molded bottle/cup/accessory holders, one on each side.
Lastly, the console masts have a bar between them where users can hang their towels.

Just like most other treadmills, the belt of the Xterra TRX3500 needs regular lubrication (after every 180 hours of use). Nevertheless, it comes pre-lubricated from the factory, so users don’t need to lubricate immediately till the completion of their first 180 hours of use. But they have to wipe the running belt after every use with a damp cloth to prevent any small objects or fibers from being pulled into motor or rollers.
